Maybe that’s the difference between who likes the ending and who doesn’t: Those who do find themselves having somewhat of an allegiance or an affinity or some sort of liking for Amy, and those who consider her evil all the way through. Now that the movie is out — and a success at the box office with a $38 million opening weekend — and the mystery ending is finally revealed, it turns out … yeah, it’s pretty much exactly the same as the book.
© 2020 Looper.com. That idea that Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf ends with this very lethally entwined couple moving into a new phase because they destroy an imaginary child, and Gone Girl had Nick and Amy, a very lethally entwined couple, also moving to a new phase.
Read on for Flynn’s explanation of the ending, which in turns infuriated and thrilled readers this year. However, Amy has yet another surprise waiting. I do want to add, though, that it’s fine with me if people don’t like that ending.
People really just want to see a sneaky person get her comeuppance, right? Things only get worse when the audience discovers that Nick, once a devoted husband, has been having an affair with Andie Fitzgerald (Emily Ratajkowski), a sweet but foolish student in his creative writing class at the local college. You know, when I’m at a reading or something, people will come up to me and are very honest about saying, “I hated the ending!” I always say, “Well, what did you want to have happen?” And it’s like, “I wanted justice!” I promise you, I just don’t think you’d find it satisfying for Amy to end up in a prison cell just sitting in a little box. I love the end of Notes on a Scandal, also a book I love. During the first phase of her plan, Amy dyed her glossy blonde hair a mousy shade of brown and gained weight so that nobody would recognize her, and though he's desperate to rescue her, Desi makes it perfectly clear that he needs Amy to turn back into the woman she was before, buying her hair dye and encouraging her to exercise. Even while she's on the run, Amy is still exacting revenge on those that she feels deserve retribution. Clad in a white dress, Amy looks impossibly innocent, but the truth is that she's been preparing for this moment for weeks, using string to create ligature marks on her wrists, violating herself with wine bottles, and staging horrifying moments as a captive for Desi's many cameras. In an act of karmic retribution, Greta and her cohort, Jeff (Boyd Holbrook), figure out that Amy has a money belt full of cash and rob her, leaving her penniless and out of options, until she remembers there's one more place where she can go.
Amy’s not going to end up in jail. I’ve never thought that any type of book should have to end in a certain way. It was playing around with that a little bit, too. After an incredible tense showdown between the two, Nick realizes he has no choice. Of course, in a story like this, there's always a twist, and this one is extraordinarily shocking. There, she tells him that he can't possibly leave his wife so soon after she's returned because his image will be forever ruined, especially now that she's painted him as an abusive, thoughtless husband who blew their money on golf clubs and animatronic dogs. I’ve never been someone who really needs a hero narrative.
In the book, at least Desi’s mother goes to the police, hysterical, saying that Amy killed her son — even though she’s whisked away, there’s the faint hope that maybe the case is re-opened somewhere down the line. Even if you couldn't relate to Amy's crazy plan, it was easy to see why the "Cool Girl" speech became legendary.
People think they would find that satisfying, if she were caught and punished. Alas, that will not happen in any version of Flynn’s story. Maybe true, but he could also be murdered. Like I said, I sought different ways to end it, and that one was the one I kept coming back to that felt the way those two would quote “work out” their issues. In North Carthage, a suburb of St. Louis, Missouri, Nick wakes up one... Dear diary. What did you want to accomplish with the ending? Mom kind of likes him!” And that’s the end. Before long, Nick realizes that he needs to stop talking to the police and start talking to a lawyer, and he hires Tanner Bolt (Tyler Perry), a smooth-talking and ridiculously expensive New York attorney who typically stands behind guilt-ridden husbands. If you’re still thinking about the book and have your opinions on it, I think it’s a great thing. I don’t need that person overcoming odds and becoming better and that kind of traditional arc. Nick turns to Tanner and Boney — who's immediately suspicious of the odd inconsistencies in Amy's story — but without a taped confession, they can't help him, leaving Nick alone in his home with a vengeful murderer.
